FIVE DAYS IN THE LIFE OF AN ADDICT

FIVE DAYS IN THE LIFE OF AN ADDICT

(A modified version of Autobiography by Portia Nelson)

Day one

I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I feel lost… I feel helpless.

It isn’t my fault!

I’m not responsible.

It takes forever to find the way out.

Day two

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am back in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

I don’t feel responsible.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Day three

I walk down the same street.

I see it is there. I still fall in … it’s a habit.

But, my eyes are open, I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I can’t believe I am back in the same place.

I am responsible.

I get out very quickly.

Day four

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Day five

I walk down a different street.
